Matt Hayes has compiled plenty of big nights leading the Yuba City High boys basketball team.
None were as big as Wednesday against Natomas. The smooth-shooting junior guard had the most explosive game of his prep career, scoring 47 points as the Honkers topped the Nighthawks 82-67.
“He was scoring everywhere,” Honkers coach Brian Davis said.
Hayes sunk six 3-pointers and showcased his ever-improving skills in the lane for the rest.
“All picks,” Davis said.
The man of the night echoed his coach when we reached him by phone, and said this is “by far” the most points he’s ever scored in a game.
“By far the most fun, too,” he added.
How could it not be? Well, maybe if you’re Natomas. Last season, the Nighthawks made news when they came to Yuba City and let Zach Nelson score 56 on them.
Hayes remembers that game fondly. But this time, he was the one who couldn’t be stopped.
“It was just when we needed a basket, I’d find a way he said.

What a game!
I wonder if RVs mob will still say “overrated” the next time they meet. But then again they said it to Zach Nelson so it would not surprise me.
The YC mens bball team has the best three players in the area bar none in Matt Hayes, Tim Claydon, and Kyle Filter.
ycbball.. you are right.
And for all those folks that slam Sutter for having players out of their school district, all three that you mentioned should actually be playing for Sutter!
I have no problem with it, but I certainly get tired of hearing that Sutter is the only school that benefits from transfers.
justathought…
Sutter would probably be winning section championships with those three. Plus they would have got Presswood and probably Au too. Filter should actually be playing for Live Oak (like Oakley) though not Sutter.
hsu/ycbball..
