After Matt Hayes drummed Natomas for 47 points Wednesday night, we here at the Press Box started thinking: Just how big of a junior season is the Yuba City guard having?
The previous two seasons produced two breakout stars for the Honkers: Point guard Tyler Fry was YC’s leader two years ago, while forward Zach Nelson was the main man getting the Brown Mob in a frenzy last year. Both had stellar senior seasons where they were Tri-County Conference MVPs and the Appeal-Democrat’s All-Area Player of the Year.
So, how is Hayes doing compared to their junior years?
The graph below compares Hayes’ season against Fry’s junior year (when he was also TCC MVP) and Zach Nelson’s junior year, when he was TCC First Team. The graph compares both their season points per game average and their single game scoring highs.
Interesting that all three players had their season highs against Natomas. Add in that Zach Nelson got his 56 point game last year against Natomas, and the Nighthawks are becoming the designated game for Honker magic moments.
