Great Job again guys……nice breakdown of the rivalry games and I am sure most don’t or didn’t know about the Pierce vs. Williams rivalry….sounds like a good one to go out and catch. My guess would be we will see the usual suspects in the area with big wins this weekend, so here goes my picks…
    L.O. 21 Gridley 17
    Biggs 24 E.N. 21
    R.V. 35 Marysville 7
    Pierce 17 Williams 10
    Y.C. 42 Bella Vista 14
    Wheatland 24 Lincoln 7
    Colusa 21 UPREP 7
    Mira Loma 21 Lindhurst 14
    Sutter 35 Clarkston 7
Looking forward to following along Friday Night in the Chat Forum…..it is great all of the people who update High School Football on that site. Good Luck to all Local Teams and hope everyone stays healthy..

Awesome Job again guy’s. You are starting to see the light with MHS. I agree with Andy though that they have some good young players and I think by time their league starts they could get 3 or 4 wins in league.
Not that you guy’s care but I will compete with HuskyFan on my picks.

    LO 35 Gridley 14
    Biggs 21 E.N. 28
    RV 48 MHS 14
    Pierce 28 Williams 7
    Y.C. 28 Bella Vista 14
    WHS 35 Lincloln 21
Colusa 28 UPrep 7 ( I know nothing about UPrep)
    Mira Loma 35 Lindhurst 14
    Sutter 45 Clarkston 0

The YC/Bella game is a match up of two unbeaten teams. Also, Bella Vista beat YC last year. Should be a good game.

RV/MHS is a coming home for Asher too, as he use to coach the Indians. I think RV will be coming in with something to prove and Wheatland is fast, but total team speed by RV is even faster. And Dove is the fastest kid MHS will see all year.

Very impressed with how fast Stinson has improved the play at Wheatland. They are impressive. Can’t wait to see the Sutter/Wheatland match-up. Wheatland JV team is pretty good too. But I will pick the Sutter JV team to win that game by a pretty good score.
Have a great night under the lights everyone and good luck to all the local teams.

Good job guys, I love hearing the podcast each week. A couple of comments

The YC game should be a good game as oruskin said, the Broncos can be tough but I do believe the YC defense will hold them to no more than 14 points. Van Dusen and and Elkins should both have a great night. YC 35 – Bella Vista 14

Not posting for MaxPreps this week, so I will be posting via Twitter, follow me @YCSportsFan

Sorry, I didn’t mean to leave out the Wheatland/Lincoln game. This will be Wheatlands first test of the year. Granted both have blowout wins to start the season. I would put Highlands and Natomas at about a 1/2 point better than LHS and MHS that Wheatland has played. Also with Lincoln winning the JV game last year 28 to 7 over Wheatland I think this should be a great game. I am pulling for the Pirates to win this week with their first test which will help them get ready for Sutter in a couple weeks.
This will be Lindhursts only chance to get a preseason win. They host both Pioneer and River Valley in the next two weeks. Good luck LHS, go get that first win.
IMHO, Acosta is the best QB in the area this year when it comes to throwing and running the ball (Little from Sutter is good too, but Sutter isn’t known for their passing). That will be the edge for LO over Gridley. The MHS QB looks like a kid to watch in years to come as he is only a sophmore and looks good at the option already. Sutter has a nice JV QB also (Post) who runs sutters wing-t very well. Yuba City and Sutter look loaded again from top to bottom (frosh/JV/Var) all undefeated).
HuskyFan, I am thinking you will not be making the trip to Idaho to watch your Huskies this week. What game if any will you be getting out to watch? I would hope you get to my Honkers/Bella game and come check us out. Would be nice to get your perspective on YC/Sutter. I, like you wish they still played. With the expection of the Yuba City/ Grant game back in 1999, I never saw more people at a game than when YC/Sutter hooked up in our local area. Thought the RV/YC games do get a nice turn out each year. Good luck to your Huskies this week.

  • W.H.S. Football Fan says:

Great job as always. I love how in depth the coverage always is from you guys. I’m not sure why Sutter would drive that far to play an average at best Clarkston team. Go to Maxpreps and check them out… their national ranking is no better than a bunch of our mid valley teams. I can see going 700+ miles to play a power team for an epic battle, but Sutter definitely looks like the dominant team on paper in that match-up. Why not just schedule another nor-cal or bay area team?

As far as the statement above from Oruskin… I agree about Stinson. He’s possibly the best coach in the section… with his resume and from what I’ve seen on the field I believe he is going to build a program in Wheatland to be reckoned with because he also coaches the youth programs. Oruskin… you also stated River Valley has more team speed that Wheatland… I admit I haven’t seen RV play this year so I can’t be sure you’re right or prove you’re wrong but Wheatland is ridiculously fast. Wheatland’s backfield and secondary are literally made up of their 4×100 track team. Austin Cooper #27 may be the fastest kid in the whole north section. As far as Wheatland’s matchup vs. Lincoln… Lincoln is NO JOKE and I hope Wheatland is mentally ready to be challenged after two blow-out victories with running clocks in the second half of both games. I’m pretty sure Stinson won’t let that happen and if they get past LincoIn… next week’s game vs Sutter will be MUST SEE FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS!

I hope Marysville and Lindhurst are able to turn things around as the season progresses. Cole Hannum leaving Marysville was devastating for that program. I know one kid doesn’t make a team as football is the ultimate team sport, but Cole was literally a one man wrecking crew on both sides of the ball.

    L.O. 28 Gridley 13
    Biggs 31 E.N. 21
    R.V. 35 Marysville 14
    Pierce 21 Williams 10
    Y.C. 35 Bella Vista 7
    Wheatland 35 Lincoln 28
    Colusa 17 UPREP 7
    Mira Loma 28 Lindhurst 14
    Sutter 42 Clarkston 14

  • SgtVick says:

Great job guys. Truly enjoy the knowledgeable banter on this message thread. Looking forward to the rest of the season…some good match ups on the horizon. But…the best match up this week is Sutter JV at Oakdale. Should be a good test of both programs, that share historically strong squads from frosh to varsity. Also looking forward to seeing what YC JV does against Placer later this year…The ultimate match up two years from now: Sutter-vs-YC

  • SgtVick says:

…my bad…didn’t mean to slight the Sutter – Oakdale Frosh match up…which also should be illuminating

  • HuskyFan says:

Hey guys, great picks….I think the only difference in most is the outcome of the E.N. vs. Biggs match up….I think this will be a great game…being a basketball guy, all I can say is that group from Biggs at the J.V. Level last year were good…didn’t play them but did play the teams they beat and know that they must be strong in order to get past some of those teams…..and as the guys mentioned, Biggs J.V. Football squad was pretty good last year too…..Definitely agree with Vick about 2 year watching a YC vs. Sutter matchup would be great…two very good J.V. Squads and I know it doesn’t always translate to the varsity level….but I have a feeling both of these squads have been good since Pee Wee Football….Oruskin, will be in Chico on Friday night otherwise would go watch Y.C. play…..I don’t know but I feel Y.C. will run all over Bella Vista….Elkins and Van Dusen are both beasts…..and Elkins can run and throw……they are good and will try to definitely catch the Inderkum vs. Y.C. match up this year…..

  • [Blocked by CFC] oruskin says:

I think as far as Sutter goes. If you watch the transition from JV to varsity you will see that good JV teams win league at varsity as well. The JV teams that don’t win the league at JV don’t usually step up and win at varsity. Sutter has a program from top to bottom, as YC does now and we will see about Wheatland. There teams seem to get better each year. Wheatland’s JV team this year is pretty good, but IMHO they are not at Sutter, YC, or RV’s level. RV has won both of their JV games by scores of 56-6 or in that area. They have not been tested yet. Will be good to see how bad they beat MHS JV this week after watching the WHS JV win that game 29-14. There are some good JV teams in the area this year. Last years YC Frosh team beat RV 6-0 to get the win. Should be a good game again this year. YC’s frosh team is very good again this year. Still don’t know why YC and RV frosh teams don’t play Sutter’s frosh team every year. Most teams in this area don’t have frosh programs and it would be nice if those three played each year. I know Sutter would be willing.

  • HuskyFan says:

Your are right on the button on that one…..as hard as it is to get a Frosh game now, you would think it would happen….I know it took some pleading to make sure our Frosh Bball Tourney had all Sutter, R.V. and Y.C…….we (Sutter) are not on par in Basketball to R.V. and Y.C., but I can tell you from first hand experience that last year the Frosh bball tourney had Y.C. vs. R.V. in the Final and the gym was packed…..very good for our bball fund…..

  • Tears of the Sun says:

Oruskin have you seen Wheatlands JV team play?

Also I’m sorry but weheatland had a 7 on 7 with RV and I think Austin Cooper is the fastest kid MHS will see this year. And team speed have you seen wheatland play yet Oruskin?

  • [Blocked by CFC] oruskin says:

    Tears of the Sun says:

The simple answer is “yes.” I saw the Wheatland/Marysville game. As I said, I came away very impressed with what they have done already out there. They are fast in the back field no doubt. Unless they ran in a track race we would never know who was really faster. I can only say that I have seen TJ play 4 or 5 times and as a JV player last year, IMHO he was the fastest kid in the local area. Nate VanDuzen who no slow runner himself told me after the YC/RV JV game two years ago when TJ Dove was a frosh that TJ was the fastest kid they played agaisnt all year. And YC plays Inderkum who has a ton of speed.

I admit you could be correct on Austin, he is fast too. But how many letters from D-1 schools does Austin have to play either football or baseball? TJ has already got multiple letters from D-1 schools. Van Duzen as well from YC. I admit I think Wheatland may be a better football team at the varsity level than RV (coaching being the difference), but TJ Dove is the best athlete in the AD reporting area already. And if TJ had not been a sophmore last year, most likely would have been the AD’s athlete of the year.
I am a Honker fan first and foremost. However, I know good athletes when I see them. Austin is one of them, but IMHO TJ (though he plays for our rival and it pains me to say) is the best in the area. I will get another look at TJ in a couple of weeks and I will get a look at Austin in the Sutter/Wheatland match up. I look at it like this. Cole Hannum got a total of 27 yeards against Sutter last year. 20 of those yards coming in the 4th when the game was well over as far as who was going to win. If Austin can run well against Sutter in next weeks game you may make me change my mind. Oh, and if you look at my comment, I said team speed. Not just a few guy’s.

As for JV. Again, yes. I saw the last half of the Wheatland/Marysville game. Their JV team looks pretty darn good. However, they are IMHO the third best JV team. Look at the score of the RV/MHS JV game tonight. This is the best RV JV team I think they have had since 2008 when the RV JV team won the TCC league championship. I mean no disrespect to Wheatland. I think The new coach and his staff are going to be a program to be very proud of in the years to come. With the kids from the base and Plumas Lake now feeding into your school and the new housing that will come soon, Wheatland could be very good for a long time. And unlike your counter part rival, you will do it with all kids from your distirct and not a bunch of transfers. That really makes it something to be proud of cause it is actually your kids.

  • SgtVick says:

    …transfers…hahahaaaaa

  • [Blocked by CFC] oruskin says:

    Sgt. Vick,

You as an ex Honker and a former YCPD officer know how many transfers Sutter has at the school, I know you do. I take nothing away from Sutters program, it is fantastic. I understand why kids who want to play football would go to Sutter. Sutter has over 125 kids who transfer from YCUSD to attend Sutter High. I have coached at sutter before and I know how many kids we had that did not live in Sutter, but in YC. Just because a kid proudly wears the Might Huskies uniform does not make them a Sutter kid. I don’t call out kids, but are you tellig me a good number of your varsity and JV football players don’t live outside of Sutters district and that you don’t have a bunch of “legal” out of district transfers at Sutter? Again, no disrespect, Sutter has a great program and great fans (just go catch a Sutter game). But I can name at least 15 kids who’s parents are people I know who have kids playing on your JV and Varsity football teams. And I know kids from Butte Vista and AK who will attending Sutter next year as well as freshmen. I have always wondered why the local paper has never done an article on Sutter and how that program built itself though the great coaching of Scott Turner and the Jr. Husky program.

  • Tears of the Sun says:

Just saying the best football player in the area has sadly moved on to Nevada Union in Cole Hunnum who has looks from D1 for football not baseball. I’ve seen Dove play baseball he is incredible at it and he’s also a great football player but his free ride will come from baseball. But who knows he may turn some heads with RVs new offensive cordinator who is a great coach and can give that program the boost it needs.

    Good luck everyone tonight

  • SgtVick says:

Rusty, Rusty, Rusty….There isn’t a great school in existence that doesn’t have transfer students…good kids, good parents, and good people, seem to always find a way to create communities. Where is this paradise with which you’re familar? Sutter schools don’t “troll” for “talent”…offer kids things they can’t deliver on (ala NU)… or do anything else that violates any policy, law, or ethic, with regards to student enrollment, participation or anything else. To insinuate otherwise is beneath your intelligence and smells of smarm, envy and hard feeling all at once…all things, I’m sure you’re not intending…IMHO…No offense intended. You’re right, as a long time resident, cop, and intimate of all things YC..I am only too familiar with the reasons that families make decisions to change schools…I also know folks who choose Mercedes over Mercury and Cadillac over Chevy ,,,and none of them are necessarily nefarious plotters, haters, rats or snobs, for doing so…but they are all (every one of them) individuals with a right to choose the features they desire for the needs of their families…and it’s none of my business why…for I neither control, nor administrate their homes or lives…Not even if I appoint myself king of a prep football blog wall.

  • Tears of the Sun says:

Haha oruskin is Rusty Hahaha now I know why there is so much nonesense being spoken Sorry kids don’t flock to Lindhurst look at the school I live in olivehurst a d I’ll tell you right now my kids aren’t going to that school.

  • [Blocked by CFC] oruskin says:

    Tears of the Sun,

You may be right on Cole. He was a great defensive football player and one of the best linebackers I had ever seen locally. And he did have D-1 schools already looking at him which is what really makes it sad he took some bad advise in his senior season. Cole was fun to watch.

  • whattheduck says:

If anything, the transfers should be used to objectively evaluate Sutter’s enrollment. Should they really be d2 with those 125 transfer kids? Probably not.

  • [Blocked by CFC] oruskin says:

    SgtVick,

See you at the WHS/Sutter game this Friday night.

    Tears of the Sun

Don’t beleive everything you read. And though i don’t know who you are, I will see you there too.

  • [Blocked by CFC] oruskin says:

Forgot to say, might be the best game of the year in the local area…

  • Adam Henry says:

    oruskin,

Keep it coming brother. So far your pics have been right on and I love it when people think they have you figured out.

  • Rusty Graham says:

    oruskin,

Enjoy reading your posts, as well as I like sgtvicks posts. He is always interesting to read. Enjoy the Sutter/Wheatland game this week everyone who goes to see it. Wish I could be there myself. I’m sure between Huskyfan, sgtvick, oruskin, and tears of the sun we should have a great recap of the game. Looking forward to reading everyone comments on the games.

  • justathought says:

TJ is a one man threat. He can run and run and score. But really… the good teams have that figured out so RV will never win much with the “one man” philosophy. And TJ is at risk as the season goes on…coach will ride him too much.

As far as baseball goes, TJ will have to be REALLY good to get money. DI and DII schools have 11.7 scholarships per team thanks to Title IX and most of the money goes to jr and sr players. The newcomers who get a bunch of scholarships are those that have signed by their soph in hs. Not always the case, but typically so.

So get those grades TJ! GPA gets you money and we want to see you play!!!
