Andy good call regarding TJ Dove! He cannot do it all! He has great teammates that can do the job and they can all work together! RV has a huge problem with their Offensive coordinators! They are a joke! Asher should take over the play calls after all it is HIS team!

  • SgtVick says:

Another great podcast guys. Can’t wait for Friday…Appropriately, as we near Halloween, Sutter has an opportunity to bust the last of their ghosts…Orland…and I have no doubt that is exactly what they are going to do. And, in anticipation of those who are still wondering and doubting, I will say this: Sutter’s just gettin’ warmed up… (Place hater speeches here: _______________________________)

  • SgtVick says:

…and, you guys could do a whole podcast on how and why the “big” schools locally, schedule the way that they do…I couldn’t agree more with what you guys said about the RV schedule…still scratching my head wondering why YC and RV wouldn’t jump at the chance to challenge themselves with a Sutter matchup…the gate alone is a good argument “for”…and the idea that they “get nothing” out of that sort of matchup is out the window

  • Huskyfan says:

Hey guys, as always appreciate your podcasts and breakdown of our local football teams. Definitely agree that revenge will be a factor in Orland vs. Sutter on Friday. I think this game will be one that Sutter will brinig the lunch pales and go to work. Y.C. has the week off and just kudos to the Honker program again, one for upping their schedule to take on the best they can find and playing with no fear and laying it all out on the field, great job Honkers and as much as I love the Huskies, you deserve the #1 ranking in the area (still would love to see a Y.C. vs. Sutter matchup though). R.V. I thought should have beat Bear River and now taking on Lindhurst, I know it was matchups that in previous years may have looked good, but please re-evaluate your schedule and find some good teams to test your program.
I also agree that Live Oak stepping up to DII will take a few years before we will see them make any noise at that level. Live Oak has had teams in the past that could compete at that level, but I haven’t seen any recent teams that Live Oak has had that can make that jump. We will see, but losing to Winters (granted in OT) wasn’t a very good start in your DII slate. As you guys mentioned, Winters may not be a playoff team in DII, but we will see. Marysville rest up and get healthy, hopefully we can see some improved play in GEL Play….as well as LHS.

  • cmon says:

“wondering why YC and RV wouldn’t jump at the chance to challenge themselves with a Sutter matchup…”

Who should YC remove from their schedule to replace with Sutter?

Additionally I don’t think Reynolds behavior after the last 2 losses to YC helped matters any.

  • Oruskin says:

Guess you guy’s didn’t see my prediction. I knew Sutter was for real, i still had doubts that Wheatland was back. Though my pick was still off on how much Sutter would score (55). I did pick correct on how many points Wheatland would score (7). My first time watching the Husky’s this year and I left the game shaking my head at how good those Huskies are.
So proud of my Honkers! Wish they could have gotten that upset win, but they played a very good football team, with speed and size. I, like many in the local area would love to see the Honkers and the Huskies play each year. But I understand why YC doesn’t see the value in playing the Huskies, but it would be fun for us as fans.
Live Oak losing to Winters is not as bad as you guy’s make it seem. Winters is 3-1 on the season with their only loss (50-27) coming against 4-0 Dixon. Dixon is a good football team. Let’s not count Winters out yet for the D-2 playoffs.
Very disapointed in RV this week. I thought for sure Asher would get his first win against Bear River. RV will be able to lick their wounds this week against LHS, but I thought at the start of they year RV would have a shot at the playoffs. Starting to think Inderkum and YC will be top dog in the TCC, with Pioneer being the team who could shake things up.
MHS and LHS had tough weeks again. At least league is around the corner and I expect MHS to get at least two wins, maybe three. Hopefully LHS can get two as well.
I have no doubt coach Stinson will have his boy’s ready to play by Friday. Tough loss last week, but you can learn a lot about your team in losses and now we will get a chance to see what Wheatland learned. They do have a team with a lot of talent.
Good luck to all this week under the lights!

  • Oruskin says:

    Andy,
I spoke to the Orland Defensive Coord last year and he told me they (Orland) only gave up 7 points all year against Wing-T teams. I saw the championship game in Orland too, and Orland was very good. This year is a different story. Sutter will win big on Friday.

  • SgtVick says:

@”cmon” : Don’t get me wrong…I’m one of the only people who predicted a stunning win by YC against Placer last week…YC is the only team in our area that would compete with Sutter this year…or next (they look good at JV and Frosh levels as well)…and I am a proud brown and gold alum.

But…YC (currently ranked in maxpreps’ ca. rankings at #248) taking on:

Bella Vista (who only have two wins, against 0&4 and 1&3 teams and is currently ranked #585 in CA)?!?

Liberty Ranch (whose wins have come against 0&5 and 1&4 teams, and is currently ranked #535 in CA)?!?

Or, River City (currently 1 & 4, their lone win coming against 0&5 Union Mine; RC currently ranked @ #616 in CA)?!?

Any one of these teams could be replaced on YC’s schedule with a rivalry rematch with Sutter (currently ranked at 109th in the state).

Both teams and families would save gas money, fill box office coffers and the stands, and improve their overall rankings (and bowl bid positions).

As for individual attitudes…stones and glass houses always comes to mind.

I would hope that individual preference for personalities would have little to do with creating meaningful matchups for kids who deserve to test their hard work against the best possible opponents.

  • footballfan says:

Okay, I can’t stay quiet anymore lol .
1st off Orland’s talent level has NOT dropped off very much defensively. They are #2 in the northern Section(all divisions) in total points allowed this season, 31 points, second to Sutter whose only allowed 30. Like Sutter they have a 235 lb fullback that bruises, and more speed and athletism at the other 2 wing positions. What Orland lacks is depth, (they dropped one to CV earlier and were missing 2 key starters, and still nearly won the game) it wasnt a butt kicking like one poster posted on here. Orland had several opportunites to take control, and it just didn’t happen that night, to CV’s credit. Is Sutter good? of course they are!! everybody knows that. But if people think that Orland will be intimidated by the name on the front of the jersey, it’s not gonna happen. There will be a game friday night, between two very good defensive teams. the past 4 years have been close competitive contests between Orland and Sutter, and has turned into a nice little league rivalry. It use to be routine blowouts with Orland being on the receiving end. If it’s like that tomorrow night I’ll eat crow :) And on a another note. Live oak will be fine for playoffs, contaratry to what was said in the podcast it’s 8 northern Section division 2 teams that will qualify for the division 2 playoffs not 6. When a division has more than 10 teams, the bracket is increased to 8 qualifying spots(with no 1st round byes) and division 2 has 12 members this year: Yreka, C.V., West Valley, Anderson, Corning, Lassen, Orland, Gridley, Liveoak, Sutter, Wheatland, Winters. Live Oak just has to finish better than 4 teams.

  • justathought says:

You are dead on, football fan!

Anyone who dismisses Orland is crazy. They will be prepared and it will be a much tougher game than WHS. I am certain Ryan and the coaches are not ignoring this very good squad.

  • justathought says:

And Andy… RV has always had great athletes, they simply lack any skill amongst the adults affiliated with the program.

And while TJ is doing all the scoring, great for TJ, but it means nothing. Football is a team sport. I’d rather have a bunch of players working as a team than a team that puts all of the load on one kid.

And lastly… if the rumor is right, and Asher goes to baseball… watch that sink as well. But heck! LHS next week will make them feel like they arrived. Again…

  • Ken says:

The fact that Sutter does not play YC was not by Sutter’s choice. That was on YC.

We would love to play them anytime!!!

  • Huskyfan says:

Good to have you back footballfan……nothing like having clean spirited debate on football….heck that is what is fun about sport and like how you stick up for your Trojans…….Everyone (including me) believe that last year was stars aligning for your Trojans….I had the same comment for the Wheatland folks a couple of weeks back about the Pirates, so I will ask you the same question…..outside of the two wins last year, can you tell me the last time Orland defeated Sutter in Football???? (again don’t look in the 00′s)……

  • Oruskin says:

    footballfan,

Just so you know, it will be a very comfortable win for Sutter on Friday night. Sutter 35 Orland 7. You don’t have the offense you had last year, and Sutter is better. And Sutter always has a good defense. And unlike Orland, Sutter easly beat CV and did not lose to them as Orland did. But like you, if I am wrong I will admit it and eat crow.. Good luck on Friday night.
Oh, and thanks for the info on the playoffs in the North Section, I did not no they made a change to the number of teams like you stated.

  • Oruskin says:

    justathought,

It is true. Asher will be RV’s head varsity baseball coach this year. Now the rumor has it that Asher will step down from the varsity football team after this season and stay on as the baseball coach only. He actually is a pretty good baseball coach. I like Brandon Asher and if I had to choose between what I thought was his best coaching sport, “football/baseball” I would say Brandon is better on the baseball side. IMHO.

  • Oruskin says:

    SgtVick,

I too would love to see Sutter, YC, & RV play eachother every year. Sutter beat RV last year at the varsity level but RV put more points on the board than any team Sutter played all year (21). TJ Dove and the JV team from RV won a very close JV game against Sutter last year. So I would think the games should be very competitive most of the time. Last years Sutter JV team lost twice I think last year. It is this years Sutter JV team that is very good. It is just my opinion, but I think RV has had better talent than Sutter in most years, but Sutter’s coaching staff is top shelf and they get the most out of their players every week. Your so correct though in that how nice it is to play just a few miles apart, get some good competition, and a nice gate to boot. I was little suprised at how good Sutter looked last week. I knew they were good, but I didn’t think they would be that good. I expected next Sutter best day’s to be next year and the year after that. Looks like they could be in the section championship game each of the next three years.

  • footballfan says:

Husky fan, the last time Orland has beaten Sutter before last year was 1978, lol. But I will say that ever since coach McDonald has taken over the program at Orland the games with Sutter has been competitive, the last sutter blowout over Orland was 40-0 in 2008, which was routine. in 2009 sutter won by 13, 2010 by 14, last year Orland won both contests. So that’s why I believe that a blowout is unlikely.

Oruskin, CV did move the ball well against Sutter, but Sutter took advantage of opportunities and the falcons didn’t. Thats what makes Sutter a top tier team right now. But it wasnt like sutter came in and mopped the floor with CV. The scoreboard is different than how the game actually went.

  • Tears of the Sun says:

Loveofthegame Mabey Asher should take I’ve then you guys can have your sixth offense in three years lol. You should have some on the field experience before you start to criticize coaching.

  • Justafan says:

Sutter has great coaching, and I think they will have no problem winning this tonight. I think tonight we just might see the changes River Valley needed to make. Asher making the changes he needed to as head coach, as far as the offensive coaching goes, should be EXACTLY what the team needed to be successful this year. There is a LOT of TALENTED players on that team and there is no reason they should have not been being used, maybe the new coaches had no clue as to the OTHER kids on the team that KNOW THE GAME OF FOOTBALL….That being said, the changes I’m hearing that have been made will be great to see! Good luck to everyone playing tonight.

  • Oruskin says:

    justafan,

RV has a number of good football players on the field. TJ is their best, but one guy will not carry a football team (ask Cole Hannum about last year at MHS). With that said, do not read to much into the game tonight with the changes like they were great or anything like that. I mean no disrespect to LHS, but this will not be a good judge if the changes worked or not. RV would beat LHS with the same plays they ran last week against Bear River. LHS is having a tough 1st year for their new coach.

  • Oruskin says:

    AD,
One more thing I noticed hearing the podcast again. Maybe I am mis-reading your comments but it sounds like you are really bashing LHS as a team. Saying this will not be a contest. I agree RV is going to beat LHS easily this week. However, a couple weeks ago you guy’s were not saying the same thing when RV played MHS and that was just as much a mis-match as tonight. You guys were even predicting scores as if it was going to be a decent match up.
There is no doubt that LHS and MHS are having a tough year. But if I were the LHS coach or MHS coach I would want to play RV, Sutter, YC, every year regardless of the score. It should make a team better playing up. You can’t have great teams every year (unless your Sutter), The boy’s from RV know a number of the kids at MHS and LHS and they like to play each other. It is too bad that the games can’t always be like last years RV/LHS game, but each year brings new challenges.

  • justathought says:

    oruskin…

I didn’t get that from the podcast at all. I thought they were rougher (as rough as they get, pretty respectful guys) on RV scheduling everybody but middle schools.

Graben sounded genuinely concerned that LHS is gonna get hurt. A real issue with 20 players a hungry RV team coming off a loss. RV will act like it’s the Super Bowl and LHS will be the fodder for them.

Not a good thing for a program with their nose barely above water.

  • Justafan says:

Yes, your right about the game tonight. However, I think with some of the changes they made this last week, we will finally see the Falcons put into play what they should have been doing the last couple weeks. And I do have to say, it’s in the coaching. Good thing the head coach saw that it wasn’t working and he needed to make those changes. I have been watching football my entire life, and I say coach your kids, use plays that will work. If you have a great QB & receiver…PASS….if you have a great RB..RUN THE BALL…do not keep using the same kid and think he can do everything. You gotta use your weapons..I said WEAPONS because there are several kids that can get the job done. It’s Friday and I can’t wait to be in the stands and checking updates on all our local schools!

  • ADVarsity Jimmy Graben says:

Oruskin, here were our predictions from the Marysville/RV game, just FYI:
    Jimmy: RV 42, Marysville 7
    Bryan: RV 35, Marysville 7
    Andy: RV 35, Marysville 14

I don’t know where you got that we all said it was going to be a close game.

Justathought made the correct inference (thank you by the way). We’re not “picking” on anybody. We just feel bad for Lindhurst in a game like this because it is a complete mismatch when it comes to depth and talent this year. That’s all.

  • Justafan says:

IMHO, I highly doubt that RV will “act” like it’s the Super Bowl. One thing I can say for RV is win they win, they are happy, but also humble. When they lose, they take it and are not sore losers. They know going into this game that Lindhurst is a small team and they are not going out to play and “hurt” anyone.

  • Justafan says:

    Correction…WHEN* they win

  • tearsofthesun says:

Mabey on the practice feild in RV Dove acctually works and your other WEAPONS. MABEY THEY THINK THEY ARE HOTSHOTS AND DON’T WORK.

  • justathought says:

    Justafan…you are probably right.

I mean really, they underwhelm their schedule for the preseason so another win over someone they should beat probably won’t get them too fired up.

  • Loveofthegame says:

    Tears…maybe …..you should spell check! =]

  • NDB@YCHS says:

who decided sutter was the measuring stick for all teams that were good

  • #nodaddyball says:

the current teams at yc have not lost to sutter in high school play, and yc has added some great player to there roster,so what makes you think it would be a important victory? who cares? outside of sutter nobody!!! sutter is a good football team and if there coaches could handle the loss to yc they would still be playing each other! dont spin it to look like yc is running from any matchups!

  • Huskyfan says:

Out at Sutter tonight, have to give Orland credit, their D was fairly solid….but like mentioned in the article it was merely a war of attrition…..Orland had a good first drive of the game but after that they would never threaten to move the ball at all against Sutter….Sutter’s Offense shot itself in the foot a couple of times, but that doesn’t take away from the good Defensive effort put up by the Trojans….good football game except for the turnovers…….and Sutter will need to clean those up before the Enterprise game for sure…..good win and now need to re-focus on the prize…..

  • footballfan says:

Great effort by both teams tonight!! Like we anticipated it was a good defensive game it was 7 to 3, Sutter at halftime. But the Trojans put the ball on the ground(fumbles) too many times in the second half to beat a team like sutter. Good news is ball security is fixable. That may have been a preview of the division 2 section championship. I would like to mention the valiant effrot of Orland only suiting up 24 players, many of them playing both ways. Both teams should win thee remaining games on their schedules, Sutter will be tested by Enterprise. Great game and good luck to both teams. Trojan Pride!

  • Oruskin says:

    Jimmy,
agreed, your scores were not giving MHS much of a shot, however, none of you were on the pod cast saying this game shouldn’t be played. You weren’t complaining about MHS and RVHS putting this game on the schedule. You were not talking about MHS getting any players hurt etc. etc. There is no doubt RV and LHS was a mismatch (as was MHS and RV). I do think MHS is about a 2 TD favorite to play LHS if they played right now. Maybe more because LHS has not shown the ability to put the ball in the end zone (but neither has MHS). It is also my understanding that neither team had any injury’s in the game last friday night. No team in this area is so good in the big school divisions that you have to worry about them being so big and strong that people would get hurt. Not anymore than in any other game. Just some of these teams have much more talent than others.

You only have to go back to last year and a last second interception by RV to stop LHS from taking the lead late in that ball game. Who would have known that one year later RV would be where they are and LHS would be where it is? Most high school teams are not year in and year out power houses like Grant, NU, Sutter and Paradise (last two in the N. section). Most teams have a good year once in a while, followed by some bad years with a Super year thrown in someplace as well.

    Sgt Vick,

I agree with you it would be nice to see Sutter and YC hook it up. But the Max Preps rankings are not very good most of the time. They have Sutter at 140 in the state. Paradise at 85, Foothill at 210, and Central Cathlic at 113. Mean-While they have YC at 245. Foothill lost to Place by a score of 42-14 with the score being 42-0 at one point. Yet Foothill is still ranked higher than YC??? Paradise has lost to Grant (state rank 133) yet Paradise is ranked higher than Grant? There are just too many high schools to rank and keep track of to have a really good ranking system. The best way is really just to look at head to head or like competition. Cetrail Cathlic lost to Placer in Stockton 48 to 30, yet Central is ranked 113 in the state? Are they 139 spots better than YC?
Don’t get me wrong, Sutter deserves to be ranked high. This has nothing to do with Sutter or their ranking, I am just talking about MaxPreps and how the rankings when you look at how they do it doesn’t always work out correctly.

  • Oruskin says:

Just went to Max Preps for scores and rankings. Yuba City lost to Placer last week 42 to 33, with the score 35 to 33 with under 3 minutes to go. Yuba City moves up only three spots in the state rankings to 245. Foothill (from the north Sec) losses to Placer 42 to 14 and has a state ranking of 210. (Huh) Paradise (the #1 N. sec team) lost to Grant 28 to 7. Yet Paradise is ranked higher than Grant 85 to 133 in the state. (Huh)
You can’t use max preps really either. There is no way Paradise is better than Grant, yet they are ranked higher. In fact they have Paradise, West Valley and Enterprise all ranked higher than Grant or Inderkum (96).

  • SgtVick says:

I agree…West Valley beats Pleasant Valley?? And moves UP?? Sutter, who bested two undefeated teams (in league) gets dropped 20 some places in two weeks…RV who beats LINDHURST??? Moves up?? YC who steps up and competes and has only one loss is ranked in the 200′s??? Maxpreps is quickly losing my confidence as a resource for prep football…BTW, if you read Maxpreps explanation of how they calculate the rankings, the above noted anomaly’s are even more inexplicable.

  • HuskyFan says:

My understanding of MaxPreps is that they take their rankings from CalPreps. CalPreps rankings are not really rankings as they are ratings. It is fluid and looks at how you play and who you played from one week to the next. In the Paradise vs. Grant example, Paradise went to Grant in the first week of the season and was beat 28 to 7 (although in that game P-Dise did move the ball down the field consistently against Grant only to stall inside the 20)…since that loss, Paradise has beat other good teams while Grant lost 3 straight….so that is why P-Dise is rated higher than Grant…….West Valley’s wins against Enterprise, McClymonds and Shasta are why they continue to rise….as Enterprise beat Chico over the weekend the W.V. win over Enterprise gets better…..and so forth….don’t know if that helps, but for Sutter they just need to continue to win…..I think it will all come down to Sutter having to beat Enterprise and then getting into the Section Final against W.V. undefeated…if both W.V. and Sutter are undefeated going into that game….I think the winner will get a shot at the NorCal regional game against the winner of the North Coast Section Div III winner……

  • SgtVick says:

    Huskyfan…as always, I agree.

Don’t get me wrong…the overall question about teams always gets settled between the lines, to think otherwise is folly. I don’t trust polls…or lists…or anything else I read on the internet…except maybe some stuff about UFO’s, Bigfoot, and the Kardashians. But, the Maxpreps article posted on 9/2/2012, clearly indicates a “problem” with Maxpreps “auto” interpretation and article authorship:

    Problem One:
They are a week behind in their article postings.

Problem Two (pulled from the Maxpreps article):
“Sutter was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from third to first in the league…” (NOTE: Indescribably, Sutter lost 18 spots on the state board this week following two solid wins and an overall undefeated record).

Problem Three (also pulled from the article)
“…The Pirates moved up to 484 from 532 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. Wheatland was able to make the jump by beating Wheatland 55-7.” (*Um…Wheatland should have seen no jump in the rankings based on a loss…and…well, um…Wheatland may indeed have beaten themselves, in their game with Sutter…but I’m sure they wouldn’t be credited for doing so).

In summary: If Sutter stays the course and wins out, it will likely be between them and Seaside for a North Coast / NorValley showdown…And, when I decide to squander my time looking for prep football stats, scores and chat, I prefer the fertile piles of the Appeal’s podcast blog…where I can be sure that any inaccuracies are generated by living breathing fans and prognosticators.

  • HuskyFan says:

Lol….great post Sgt……I agree between the lines will always be the true indicator……I didn’t read the MaxPreps article you reference, but will try to find and give it a glance….I enjoy HS Football and other people who are passionate about it as well…..it is good fun and all in all beats other past times……
