It’s playoff time for nine Mid-Valley football programs and it all begins on Friday night. On this week’s Press Box Podcast, we will break down the brackets from both the Northern and Sac-Joaquin Sections. We will analyze each matchup and get you ready for Friday night’s action.
Week Ten/Brackets in review (21:04)
Round One preview (32:16)
As always you guys do a fantastic job recapping and then looking ahead at our local match ups……well we have such a situation not seen in our local area in a long time….3 great squads playing in the playoffs and the tough choice of what to watch…..I will start with the road game….RV vs. American Canyon…..I think you guys are spot on that RV if they come to play with the emotion that they had in the Mayor’s Cup can win this game, it is just come out and play hard and take the game to them……Sutter vs. Yreka…..as you guys stated on paper this should be a mis-match….and I even thought it would be best if the Northern Section switched the 8th seed with the 7th seed and have Sutter play Live Oak and then Yreka could have played Central Valley and save on travel costs as on paper CV and Sutter should advance, but we don’t play games on paper…so we shall see…..YC vs. DO…..the SJS did not do YC any favor by placing them A. the #2 sedd and B. matching them up with the Defending DIII Section Champs…..but if I know the YC faithful they know that just put the ball in play and they will be there….the one thing I really admire about that program is they truly do not care about who they play…..Also why YC is a dangerous team to play they are going to fight for every minute they are on the field…..this game is a toss up…..I think if YC can throw the ball they will be successful…DO has had problems defending teh pass all year…..that is why Oaks Christian killed them….So now the big dilemma, hopefully Sutter will be blowing Yreka out by half and I can skip over to watch a the second half of YC vs. DO….Good Luck to all this Friday……..
HuskyFan,
Get your section pass or something, cause the SJS section is $10.00 bucks for adults. Trying to get two games in one night is expensive. If it were me, we know Sutter is going to win on Friday night. I would take this one week to go watch YC play. Then you can follow Sutter for the last two games of the North Section.
AD, great job this year guy’s on the podcast. I know sometimes we as fans can get a little nit-picky on some issues. But I think it is all in good fun and I hope not taken seriously by others. It makes for good banter back and fourth. You guy’s are tops!
Good luck to all the local playoff teams and I hope to find us all in the winners circle on Saturday morning when I read the AD with my morning cup of coffee. Great season to all.
I am going to make a call cause I think MaxPreps is flawed. MaxPreps has Medesto Christian beating Capital Christian. I think Capitial is going to beat Modesto (6-4) by a pretty solid score of CC 35 MC 14.
Del Oro got into this years playoffs more on history than they did this years team (5-5). If YC doesn’t have turnovers, YC will win this game 35 to 21. Go Honkers!
I agree RV has a chance to win this week. If Dove were healthy and playing I would say RV would win. I still think RV has a shot, but I have to go with American Canyon 21 to 14. Go Falcons, please make me wrong!
Sutter is Sutter, they will win with ease on Friday. Sutter 45 Yreaka 7
Live Oak is making a big step up this year. Central Valley played a much tougher schedule than did the Lions. It will pay off for CV as I think this game goes CV 35 Live Oak 7. Go Lions!
I Agree, great banter…..and I need to show for Sutter (at least for the first half), I will follow the YC score on the Prep Blog that the AD helps out with….and if the YC score is still good at half, it will be worth the 10 bucks……especially to see YC quiet the doubters…..like I said before you have to admire how nothing fazes YC’s program…..DO, NU, Grant….like I said for them just tee it up and lets go play….so I am excited to see YC and DO this Friday….great job again guys….and sorry to those of my homerism for Sutter….just hard to control sometimes….
HuskyFan,
Why would any of those schools faze YC. Like you when you were here we have played with those schools for years. In fact in the 1998 season Grant and NU were in our league. Our only loss was to grant 37 to 35 and Ontario Smith… But YC has been playing with the big boys for years so it isn’t that big of a deal. Good luck to your Huskies and hope to see you in the second half of the YC game. Though I will say, you won’t have a seat. There will be 4 to 5 thousand people at the YC game on Friday night. DO travels well. I think it will the biggest game at YC since the Grant/YC game in 98 which drew an estimated 6 thousand fans to Honker stadium.
And no problem being a homer, must of us are for one team or another. At least you can admit it and still be fair to the other programs. If I don’t see you at a playoff game, see you during the baskeball season.
Oruskin,
You bet, good luck to YC and RV tomorrow night….will try to get over for the second half…and I always stand at games so sitting will not be an issue…..
Also, I am old, so when I was at YC we were in the Delta League with Davis, Woodland, Highlands, Norte and Jesiut…of course Norte shut down and the kids transfered over to Grant….
HuskeyFan,
I’m your age (or close anyway). My first year at YC we were in the Sierra Foothill league. My JV year we joined the Delta League with the schools you mentioned. In fact, I played aginst Donald Rodgers who was a running back/ Defensive back for the Don’s back then. He also had a younger brother, Reggie Rogers who was very good. In the playoffs we played against Gerold Whilhite (Rancho Cordova). Good football back then for sure.
Everyone talks about the 1987 team and the this years team. But let me tell you what, the best team I ever saw out of YC (in my years) is the the 1976 YC Honkers team. They had everything you needed to win football that year, speed, size, QB, and great running backs. Delane Haymore was the best athlete on that team, and you had Robert Winship, Larry Abanatie, Jim Stassi, in the backfield. Some of the linemen were Rick Western (6’6″ 260), Bob Noreene (6’2″ 220), Randy Aggarie, Russ Franco, Jimmy Pappas and others. At wideout they had speedsters Blair Smith and Rick Fergeson.
Jimmy, ask your dad about that team. I believe he was a new PE teacher and was coaching the JV football team in those years. IMHO that was the best YC team I ever saw. I know my father use to talk about some teams in the 1960′s and early 70′s too. I remember some of the players names but I couldn’t tell you if they were as good as the teams I can remember. The 1983 team with Chris Perterson and Doug VanDuzen (Nate’s uncle) was a pretty good team too, losing in the playoffs to Section Champion, Rancho Cordova (led by Kevin Whilhite) in a epic battle by only 1 point, if memory serves me correctly. Yuba City has played very very good football teams over the years. Nice to see it coming back into our own. Yuba City was a very good solid football program for over two decades and for the past couple decades the wins have been far between. Nice to see JP and company bring us back to a top program. YC has a bright future. The JV team this year went 10-0 and when you combine this years junior class with this years JV class you have a team that at the JV level was a combined 19-1. I hope that can carry over to the varsity level in the years to come. Go get-em Honkers.
Hey Oruskin,
Yep, I played against Reggie in Bball…..he would slam on us all the time and also wilhite in Cordova as well…..I remember them ending a bball game with Jesiut becuase we got into a fight with them in the 4th qtr…..too funny….made it out to YC tonight for a part of the 3rd qtr and the 4th…..got to see Herrara’s run for a TD…he is fast and shifty…sorry about the result but DO was big and fast…..B. Monroe is good for them….well hope Bball will bring another TCC Title to the Honkers….
Playoff Weekend:
Great to see so many local teams playing in the post season. As mentioned in today’s articles, playoffs really tell you where your programs are at, and our local teams are developing well. While some say that YC got a raw deal being bumped to D2, it should be looked upon as a compliment that the CIF seeded them at #2. YC will be back next year with invaluable playoff experience.
Went to the RV/American Canyon (AC) game in Vallejo. RV had a tough time adjusting to the speed and size of AC. Oregon commit Chris Seisay was impressive on both sides of the ball. AC throttled back a bit in the second half and RV played them pretty even, scoring a touchdown in the fourth quarter. RV should be proud of their season.
Good luck today to the RV Boys Soccer Team as they play Central Valley in Stockton for the D3 Section finals.
Looking forward to the Sutter/Orland game next week.
