The Sutter High Huskies are the only football team left in contention this season and they will put it all on the line on Saturday at home against West Valley. On this week’s podcast, we will break down Sutter’s win over Orland and look ahead to Saturday’s matchup. We’ll also break down Sutter’s chances at a state bowl bid.

As you guys said; First things first…and I know that players and coaches are focused on FIRST FIRST…but… just for the sake of rumor and conversation…here’s CalHiSports summary:
“The Sutter vs. Seaside scenario also would be further complicated by what happens in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV playoffs. If Central Catholic wins that title, no Sac-Joaquin teams would be eligible for the NorCal D3 bowl from that bracket because the Raiders would be in D4. If it’s Escalon, Los Banos or Center of Antelope, the winner probably will have avenging losses to talk about and a possible strength of schedule edge over both Sutter and Seaside. Escalon, in fact, will try to avenge one of its two losses this week against Los Banos and the Cougars already have their big win over previously unbeaten Placer in their belt…..
*We stuck with Sutter slightly ahead of Seaside in this week’s rankings. We think the Huskies benefit by getting to play West Valley of Cottonwood in this week’s Northern Section D2 final. West Valley avenged its only loss in the semis with a 13-10 win over Central Valley of Shasta Lake and also has wins this year over McClymonds of Oakland (probable Oakland champion) along with D1 section finalist Enterprise. Sutter, in fact, may need Enterprise (a team it also has beaten) to win in its game against Paradise as much as its own game. Seaside, on the other hand, can benefit by what happens with Monterey in the CCS D3 playoffs. The Spartans certainly weren’t helped by Palma of Salinas getting dumped by St. Ignatius in the CCS Open Division….”

Hey Great Job again guys, and tremendous thanks to you and the Appeal Democrat for your coverage all year of our local teams…I know we say that every week, but it really is a wonderful dedication you display getting out seeing the teams and talking to the coaches that us who root for our teams appreciate, we are lucky to have you!!!!
Now that I sweetened you guys up…j/k….I will go over the Sutter vs. Orland game, I know these were two good defenses matching up but a little something has to be said about the offenses really not doing anything at all too. The weather was bad and the football was slick and footing was bad, but it really seemed like two teams that didn’t want to make a mistake and playing cautiously. It did turn out to be offensive mistakes that changed the game, so maybe that was the best strategy, but I saw a couple of teams trying not to lose instead of winning the game. Anyways my take of the game. Hats off to Coach McDonald of Orland who has done a great job in turning around the culture at Orland and making a great rivalvry with Sutter. Sutter used to take the Orland game like a game with Winters, but not anymore and that is in part to the great job Coach McDonald has done up there…so congrats….
West Valley – I know I believe I said in Week one or two that I thought it would come down to Sutter vs. West Valley in the Championship and it has turned out that way. These two programs have been linked going back to 2004 when Sutter beat West Valley and finished the season 12-0 and West Valley finished the season 11-1 with Sutter winning the DII Title and West Valley winning the DI Title that year. I believe they have played 6 times since with West Valley winning one and Sutter winning 5 times. This will be a great matchup and either team has the ability to knock the otther off. It will take a much better performance from the offense and another great performance from the defense to get by West Valley.
State Bowl Regional Play in Game – In DIII for the play in game, we have the following Sections:
North Section Division II, III
North Coast Section Division III, IV
San Francisco Section – No Divisions qualify
Oakland Section – No Divisions qualify
Central Coast Section – Div III, IV
San Juaquin Section – Div IV
As you can see there are truly 4 Section champions that will qualify for 2 spots in this game. In the Northern Section the Division II champion will be head and shoulders above the Division III champion as in the North Coast Section the DIII champion would be better than the DIV champion. This is where we would see a El Cerrito or Marin Catholic and for the North Section Sutter. The Central Coast Champion if it is Seaside would qualify as the DIV champion and I believe they have a beat one remaining team from DIII (Monterey). In the San Juaquin Section you have DIV which currently has Center, Central Catholic, Escalon, and Los Banos. Here is the question, since Placer is out and the teams left all have losses which team would come from here? The odds favorite is Central Catholic, and they could qualify for either Regional play in game for Norcal DIII or small school. If the thought would be to compete down south the thinking would be to have (if Central Catholic wins the Section Title) Central Catholic play in the small school game so they can better compete with Socal and also that would lock a spot for the SJS in the State game as they are head and shoulders above any small school competitor in the Regional small school division from the North. If Center, Escalon, Los Banos were to win it would be a tough argument with all of them having losses being selected over what could be a couple of undefeated teams. Especially for Center as they were beat soundly by Chico who currently is not in the playoffs anymore in the Northern Section as they were beaten soundly by Enterprise for the second time. Los Banos has two losses if they were to win and I can’t recall a time a 2 loss team was selected over an undefeated team. This is why most people on blogs from what I have read sees this as coming down to Sutter and Seaside. So the criteria then comes into play, record (even), strength of schedule is next and then this were the argument comes in and on Sutter’s side from what I see is the wins over Out of Section teams first, Sutter beat Bethel (now I know everyone thinks Bethel isn’t a good win, but hear me out) Bethel was SJS DI playoff team (one and done though) and the loss they suffered to Sutter was their worst loss on the season. where as Seaside has never played anyone outside of their Section, so I would put this as in Sutter’s favor as well as traveling up to Idaho and beating a team from Washington. Whether you may think that was a bad team or not (4-6 on the season), it still shows Sutter going on the road and playing someone else outside of the Section. Also with Sutter going up to Enterprise and beating them in Redding which is something Del Campo (who reached the 2nd round in DII of SJS playoffs) could not do getting spanked by Enterprise. So in a scenario (which is if favorites win) that Sutter wins NS DII Title, Central Catholic wins SJS DIV Title, Seaside wins CCS DIV Title and either El Cerrito or Marin Catholic wins the NCS DIII Title my thought is you would see a Sutter vs either El Cerrito or Marin Catholic in the Regional Play in Game for DIII for the State game. My thoughts are Marin Catholic wins in the NCS.
All that aside it all means nothing if Sutter doesn’t win Saturday against a very good West Valley team (who by the way would also have a shot if they were to win and have a couple of things shake their way).
Sorry so long..and good luck to my Huskies on Saturday and Happy Thanksgiving to all
Thanks Huskyfan for the kind words to Orland, it nice to have a competitive football program after many years of not having one. Coach Mcdonald and his staff has hung in there, and do a fantastic job. Happy holidays to all Good luck to the huskies this weekend, keep that section title in the BVL.
Thank You footballfan……Orland plays hard and hits hard, great defense……McDonald and his coaching staff deserve a lot of the credit as well as the kids who put in the work…..
