The Huskies are section champs, but is their season over? On this episode of the Press Box Podcast, we will recap Sutter’s epic win over West Valley in the Northern Section title game. Then, we will analyze the Huskies’ chances at a Nor Cal Regional bowl bid. We’ll all find out the verdict on Sunday. Until then, we’ll get you set.
Talking Sutter Football (26:38)
Just a note. Schools can choose to play in a Division above their enrollment if they choose too. So Sutter could choose to play D-1 in their section. As for the state bowl game, that does go to enrollment and Sutter could do nothing about that. Grant and Central Catholic are two schools who play up for their enrollment. Central Catholic is playing the DivIII section playoffs, however, they are a DivIV State bowl team.
Oh, I did forget to mention that if Sutter did choose to play up, it would require all of their athletic teams to do so. Most likely a good reason they don’t play up as they would be fine in Boy’s Football and Wrestling, and in girls Volleyball and Soccer. However, in the rest of the sport programs they would struggle playing up.
I think Sutter is sitting just fine for this year. I think they will get the play-in game against one of the other teams. I am pulling for El Cerrito to beat Marin Catholic. Then two undefeated teams (Sutter vs El Cerrito) would be in the play-in game. This is the perfect senerio for the Nor-Cal section. They are not happy with the play and record of the North Section (only given one chance) in the state bowl games. This gives them the opportunity to let Sutter get a shot (and tell everyone hey you got a chance) and make sure you send a good team to the state bowl game. El Cerrito if they beat Sutter would do just fine and if Sutter beat El Cerrito then then Nor-Cal can be sure they sent the best team they could to the state bowl game. It is a win/win for the Nor-Cal. Best of luck Sutter and I am hoping to go watch you guy’s play whom ever you meet in the Nor-Cal play-in game. Go Huskies!
Just my opinion but Sutter needs to add some out of Section teams to play each year.Play an Escalon or Central Catholic not saying they need to play a large school.I see Sutter fans saying anyone any where any time.Well maybe it is time. Now this is not ment as a slap at Sutter you have a great program up there, just show that out of area.
oruskin…
Sutter would not struggle in baseball. They have proven themselves against bigger schools over and over again…
Jesse Pruit;
Sutter played Central Catholic a few years ago and played them tough. I don’t work for sutter nor have a child playing there but they tell me they have tried to get teams from the SJ to play them. They keep being told no thanks. Sutter did play Bethel from the SJ section this year, and beat them very handly (something like 44-6). Sutter also use to play Yuba City High School and River Valley High School and both of those schools no longer want to play Sutter. I will say RV is like 1-5 against sutter, while YC is 2-2 with two close game wins each and two blowout wins each. So though I am not a #1 Sutter fan (like Sutter but YC and RV are my two teams first) Sutter would be playing more SJ teams if they could.
Just a thought. No they would not on a consistent basis. Sure in some years they would be OK or do real well. But year in and year out Sutter would not compete in baseball or basketball against the bigger schools. Like the next two years Sutter could compete with the big boy’s I have no doubt. But these next two years could be the best baseball teams Sutter has had in many years. Remember Maxwell? I admit though I could be wrong. Wouldn’t be the first time and after all, is just IMHO. Sutter will be good this year. I hope they play the Chico’s and Pleasant Valleys, Foothills. It will be good to see how they match up in baseball. My feeling is this year they would do just fine. They are goint to give YC a run at the best in our local area this year, if not be the best.
Truth is… it’s a pretty silly thing comparing a school of 650 kids vs. schools with 1800 kids. All I know is that SU beats big school teams in baseball more often than they lose to them. And they have for a number of years.
I think that speaks highly of SU. But then again…we will only know how SU stacks up when they play in Hilmar this year and some of the Chico teams. RV will not play SU this year. My thought? RV is tired of getting waxed every year…non-conference or summer ball. We have their number. Always have and will never know about the future.
So Marin Catholic has five DI commits? Incredible. Private schools do not lose until they run out of money and they don’t seem to run out of money!
The fact is… no matter what happens, no one will ever take last Saturday night away from these kids and for those who were there, you know how euphoric that moment was!
Last season after we (orland) won the section title, we drove down to Oakland and watched the Marin Catholic vs. Campolindo North Coast Section Championship, with a deam of playing for a styate title, and we felt that our defense and running game was better than both teams’ their passing games were better than ours….I have a feel that if Sutter gets in the nod, they will win the state title. They will win in similar fashion as Escalon won theirs 2 years ago. The further south you go the more spread teams you see, and you see fewer TRUE wing-t teams. I have a feeling Sutter will have an advatage because they may play a team that sees 1 or 2(at the most) wing t teams in a season, and usually a watered down/basterdize version of it. Sutter’s defense is great and will be able to handle the spread offense(enterprise, Clarkson, Yreka, Winters etc.) In the grand scheme of things every Northern section football fan should be a Husky fan for the next few weeks, if they win or even perform well, Northern Section will get respect, and maybe have an easier time of getting teams choosen in the future. From what I saw at that game last year Sutter, West Valley, Orland Central valley can all play with those teams.
My post was ment more to get Sutter to play down here, because I would like to see them play.I’m a high school football fanatic.I love to see how a veer team does against a wing-t or a spread / Cox box offence.I personaly would love to see Sutter v Escalon both old school home town smashmouth football.I understand some time it hard to get schools to play when you have a winning program.I’m am Oakdale Alum and still have nieces and nephews there.Alot of the bigger schools won’t play them either.Just saying would love to see some of the Northern Section teams play down here.I know that Oakdale in the last couple of years played San Diego Section NCS and Central Coast teams so it can be done.Good luck Sutter ao the Bowl selection thing. But tonight I will be standing in the rain cheering for my Mustangs in Stockton hoping third time is a charm! I’m not saying…I’m just sayin…GO OAKDALE!!
Footballfan,
I liked your Orland team last year (must admit they were better this year than I thought they would be). The difference is just plan numbers. SJ section is the largest section in the state. I am hoping Sutter gets a shot this year at the play-in game. It would be nice to for all of to see just how the north stacks up against the other sections. I think in most years the North section teams would not stack up. However, I think last years Orland team (because of their defense) and this years Sutter teams have a shot. I have a college buddy whom I’m meeting tonight at Sac State to watch Granite Bay vs Oak Ridge. He lives in the bay area. I have been talking to him about this Sutter team and saying how they should be in the play-in game against the winner of Marin Catholic/El Cerrito. All he said to me was, “be careful what you wish for.” Sutter is the best team in the North Section this year. Let’s hope we get to see how they match up with the rest of Nor-Cal.
Jesse Pruit, Sutters freshman team and JV team went to Oakdale this season and played your mustangs. First off let me tell you what a beautiful stadium they have down there.
Sutters frosh team got man handled. PERIOD end of conversation.
Sutters JV team man handled your JV team and I was told that your JV team was a very sucessful group.
It was a long drive to say the least but the experience we got was well worth it. I could tell that Oakdales program is a lot like Sutters. The stands were full and I had the priveledge to speak to a proud Oakdale Grandpa. And that was a Thursday night with no varsity game involved.. Good Luck to The Oakdale Mustangs this evening
footballfan love your post. Moe you always have the best to say.
Congrads to Sutter on your Bowl pick and the fact you don’t have to travel so far.I’m rooting for you!
Same to you Jesse. I got the opportunity to speak to Coach Merzon the other day at the Escalon game and congrats are in order to Oakdale as well. We were discussing about Oakdale and Sutter being at the same venue for the game but it didnt quite work out that way.
Sutter would never move up because they enjoy feasting on teams like Gridley and Orland and Wheatland.. etc.. year in and year out.. They live in their little comfort bubble and because of the precision an execution of their 1940′s offense they are able beat up on teams that are less disciplined and not as organized. It’s very easy to run your trickery gimmick offense against teams that aren’t very disciplined. The sad thing is all the athletes that go through the program have no real shot at playing football beyond high school because that system does not translate. Anyone who thinks different I challenge you in all the supposed greatness of Sutter football name me your 3 and 4 and 5 star recruits? It is the total injustice to every athlete that has ever played in that “wing t” system. I feel for all them athletes because who’s to know which kid had the tools to be a division 1 college quarterback or what kids could have shown the ability to run great routes create separation and make plays through a “conventional” passing game. And for the running backs that are put in a “spot” in that wing t system, imagine if you guys played in a system that gave you the opportunity to show vision and read your cut back lanes from a zone blocking system. Anybody can run to a spot in a system. What separates you from everyone else as an elite running back is your ability to have vision and sadly the Wing T is like playing football blindly because you run to a spot and it’s something you could do in your sleep. It has been an injustice to all the solid running backs that have gone through that program that never got to sharpen their running back skill sets that translate at the collegiate level and in the NFL. For anyone who thinks I am wrong name one division 1 university program or 1 NFL team that runs the Wing T. Sure Air force and a couple others have stubbornly stuck to tradition but those teams never contend for championships nor do those teams have their skilled players drafted in the NFL. 99 percent of top programs don’t run that offense and There is a reason for it and simply that reason is the offense is so predictable it would be impossible to pick up a first down let alone score a point against teams that are as disciplined and prepared as you are. Also that offense handcuffs talented athletes taking away their ability to be playmakers weather that be a quarterback making a good read in a great throw or receiver getting open on a great route for a big touchdown or a running back picking up a blitz giving the quarterback time to make that throw or better yet that running back taking a handoff that is supposed to stretch of right tackle but having the vision and ability to see the cut back lane through the 2 hole that lead to an 80 yard touchdown run!!! I will be in Oroville Saturday night in anticipation of seeing that spread offense get up a couple of scores quickly and I want to see that wing t system perform against a team that is disciplined and prepared and will put up big time points against your team so good luck Saturday night because you’re gonna need it!!!

I guess if these kids played to go to a DI school your rant would be valid.
The problem with high school sports is that there are too many people like you who think HS sports is the first step towards college and pro sports.
With a GPS hovering around 3.5 as a team and several of the stars with GPAs over 4.0, their goal is certainly college. If they get to play sports, great. If they don’t, great.
In fact, the star players have incredible career goals and they do not include football and a Communications degree.
They play for each other and, honestly, have a much better perspective on athletics than you do.
And, BTW, playing Gridley, et al, is not their choice.
gronq59,
I dont know what team you root for, but is their a “need” for that post? wow you just insulted an entire league. I tell you what bring whatever team you’re rooting for up to big Orland and we’ll show you how undiciplined our defense is… And for your information the spread offense is actually a modern day version of the single wing offense with single wing concepts, which was used in the 1920′s and 30′s. So who’s more old fashioned? Good luck Happy Holidays.
Nice post fan…
That Orland D is just plain nasty and I suspect Marin would have had the same amount of trouble with OHS as they did with SU!
